Business Analyst Job Description

A Business Analyst is responsible for investigating and analysing business activities and processes and looking to make them more efficient through the use of IT resources (both hardware and software).  

They can implement simple measures such as new software for customer relationship management, to a full integrated system dealing with all stages from payment to stock control and dispatch depending on the needs of the business.

Although the majority of Business Analysts do work in house there is a significant number who are employed on a contract basis or through consultancy firms.

A Business Analyst will:

  • Identify areas for improvement
  • Advise Senior Management
  • Create IT Solutions
  • Test IT systems
  • Provide staff training of the systems implemented

A Business Analyst will normally work between 37 and 40 hours a week, however, during key stages they will be expected to work overtime to ensure the systems they are implanting are taken up smoothly.

Junior Business Analysts should expect to be looking at job descriptions offering around £26,500 with more experienced Business Analysts looking at salaries of around £65,000.

A Business Analyst should ideally:

  • Have excellent IT skills
  • Have an excellent grasp of maths
  • Be able to work under pressure
  • Be a good leader
  • Have an excellent understanding of business environments
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills

The majority of Business Analyst Jobs are situated in and around London however there is also high demand in Leeds, Reading, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.
