Developer Vacancies and Developer Careers

Despite the accelerating trend towards outsourcing, home-grown development skills are still in hot demand in the UK jobs market and there are still thousands of developer vacancies and developer careers available. However, like Orwell’s farm animals, while all development environments and techniques may have been created equal, the ever-changing pressures on the IT sector mean that some will be more equal than others when it comes to getting the best out of the job market – and developer jobs, especially in the current market where there are a higher number of candidates.

Web development remains top of the list for many agendas, with the continuing emphasis on accessibility, integration and compliance driving many applications towards Inter/intranet enablement. Core skills such as HTML and XML/XSLT may form the foundations of a great web developer’s skills, but what will catch the eye of the recruiter aiming to meet the demands of the content-hungry and web-savvy market will be knowledge of rich client tools such as Java 6, NetBeans and Eclipse.

The advent of Web 2.0 has seen a flurry of activity to round out these established environments with a range of tools and improvements aimed at increasing the productivity of the new generation of web developers, in particular by harnessing and integrating with the scripting languages - such as Python, Ruby and JavaScript -that have traditionally been the best weapons in the web coding armoury. This has generated a huge number of developer vacancies over the last couple of years.

A key driver of this enhancement effort is the need to provide support for Web Services development; the opportunities that can be realised by flexible, extensible structures for inter-system communication and integration are very evident and developers with skills in the core technologies such as SOAP and WSDL will be in demand.

Many of the same skills that make a developer stand out from the crowd in the creation of Inter/intranet applications can be used to good effect in another high-profile area of the development market. Mobile technologies, already one of the fastest growth areas in the IT sector, will receive another boost from this year with the release of the bandwidth previously occupied by analogue television, and developers with experience and knowledge in this area should see an increase in both the number and variety of available roles.

Again, environments such as NetBeans have recently been dressed with additional features to aid the developer of high-quality mobile applications, whether geared towards gaming, other entertainment applications, or the business professional on the move. Some industry commentators are already predicting that smartphones will out-evolve notebook computers in the foreseeable future; while I don’t believe it’s time to put the docking station on Ebay just yet, it’s undoubtedly the case that the proliferation of mobile Internet portals, sat-nav systems, PDAs and handheld gaming consoles will provide many opportunities for developers who can offer J2ME or similar mobile development experience and there has been a significant growth in developer vacancies here.

Security and identity continue to hit headlines, and Internet development is a key area where skills in the technologies and techniques for securing systems – and in particular, mobile and distributed systems - can really set a programmer or developer apart. Again, Web Services are a growth area here, with WS-Security experience and knowledge of protocols such as SAML and Kerberos adding to a developer’s marketability. Awareness of the various OASIS standards will also pay dividends for the security-oriented development professional. Management of identity in cyberspace, for example through structures such as the vaunted single sign-on, is a hot topic, as increasing numbers of day-to-day tasks – banking, shopping, bill payment, access to local services, social and professional networking and so forth – are presented in a web-accessible form.

The overriding picture is one of specialisation for developer vacancies and developer careers 2009 ; the more specific and targeted a developer’s skill set, the more likely they are to catch the eye of recruiters who enjoy an ever-more sophisticated appreciation of the particular combination of knowledge and experience that will best meet their requirements. Plus in 2009 a much higher supply of developer candidates chasing a smaller number of developer vacancies.
